Siem Reap: The beautiful ruins of Angkor

My love for old buildings and history placed Angkor Wat high on my travel list for the longest time.  I finally made my way to Siem Reap in June 2017 and the temples did not disappoint.

My favourite wat - Banteay Kdei

The 4-days 3-nights trip to Siem Reap was intended to be relaxing and an opportunity to catch up with sleep after weeks of long working hours.

Overall, we found Siem Reap a sleepy, humid and dusty town with the Angkor complex as its main attraction.  Apart from the temples, there were plenty of night markets and shops selling souvenirs, knock-offs, clothes, artwork within the town centre.

We stayed at Anusa Residence & Spa which is a small boutique hotel off the beaten path.  The rooms are spacious, clean and neat.  Breakfast consisted of fruits, pastries and a choice of main, which can be enjoyed by the small outdoor pool.  The hotel is not within walking distance to Pub Street but the hotel staff was always more than happy to hail a tuk tuk driver for us and the trips cost USD 2 one way.

The skinny of our itinerary:

Day 1
  • arrived at Siem Reap International Airport and we were welcomed by the tuk tuk driver sent by the hotel
  • freshened up at the hotel and was given a Siem Reap 101 crash course by Sam
  • arranged for a half-day trip and tuk tuk driver for our visit to the Angkor complex the following day
  • lunched at Old House Restaurant

Fish amok (must try at Siem Reap)

  • explored Pub Street, markets and the city centre
  • dined at the hotel
Day 2
  • queued up really early in the morning for tickets to enter the Angkor Wat complex
  • explored Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Banteay Kdei, Ta Prohm, Baphuon, Bayon and other smaller wats

The famed Angkor Wat

Baphuon

Ta Prohm, where the Tomb Raider was filmed

Bayon

Fish amok (again)
Day 3
Unique and delicious dishes served at Marum, a training restaurant part of TREE
  • visited the Angkor National Museum which had exhibits on Angkor Wat and as such, is best visited before visiting the Angkor complex
  • popped by T Galleria, duty free shopping complex next door to the museum
  • enjoyed a bloody Mary by the hotel pool
  • dined at Mamma Shop, a cozy Italian restaurant at the outskirts of the town centre
  • ice cream at Gelato and Coffee Lab (yes, we liked it that much!)

Day 4 - it was time to say goodbye to Siem Reap...
